Case study overview

The work behind the result.

The Challenge

Grill Grub came to us with a subscription business concept that required more than a standard ecommerce website.

The business operates around a seasonal grilling program where customers receive a curated selection of premium, grill-ready proteins each month. The contents of the box change throughout the season, while customers also need the ability to add additional products to their order.

The experience also needed to account for Grill Grub's limited delivery capacity and specific service areas.

The challenge was to turn this business model into a simple, intuitive digital experience where customers could understand what they were getting, check whether delivery was available in their area, subscribe, and customize their box — without making the underlying subscription logic feel complicated.

The Solution

A Subscription Website Built From Scratch

We designed and built the Grill Grub website from the ground up using Subbly, creating a subscription-first experience around the unique way the business operates.

Rather than forcing the business into a traditional recurring subscription model, we built the website around its seasonal structure, changing monthly box contents, add-ons, delivery areas, and limited capacity.

The result is a custom subscription experience that makes a complex operational model feel simple for the customer.

Seasonal Subscription Boxes

A Different Box Every Month

One of the core requirements was allowing Grill Grub to change the contents of its subscription box throughout the grilling season.

We used Subbly Bundles to create the monthly product structure.

Each month has its own curated portfolio of products, allowing the Grill Grub team to update the box contents as the season progresses.

Customers can explore the current and upcoming monthly boxes directly on the website before deciding to join.

The experience includes:

  • Monthly product collections

  • Seasonal box structure

  • Curated product lineups

  • Product quantities and descriptions

  • Flexible monthly updates

  • Subscription-based purchasing

This allows Grill Grub to operate a subscription model that is not based around one static box, but an evolving seasonal program.

Add-On Products

More Flexibility Inside the Box

We also created an add-on experience that allows customers to purchase additional products alongside their selected subscription box.

Instead of creating a separate purchase journey, customers can add extra products to their existing box.

This gives Grill Grub an additional opportunity to increase order value while giving customers more flexibility around what they receive.

The experience supports:

  • Additional products

  • Add-ons alongside subscription boxes

  • Flexible product selection

  • Increased basket value

  • A simple customer journey

Delivery Area & ZIP Code Validation

Making Delivery Availability Clear From the Start

Because Grill Grub operates within specific delivery areas and has limited weekly capacity, customers need to know whether the service is available before starting the subscription journey.

We created a dedicated delivery area system and ZIP code validation experience.

Customers can enter their ZIP code directly in the hero section and quickly determine whether Grill Grub currently delivers to their area.

The same delivery validation logic is also integrated into the main subscription journey on the homepage.

This removes uncertainty early in the customer journey and helps prevent customers from entering the subscription flow only to discover later that delivery isn't available in their location.

Delivery Areas

We created a dedicated Delivery Areas page that clearly separates current service areas from locations planned for future expansion.

The page gives customers an easy way to understand where Grill Grub currently delivers while also providing a path for customers outside the current delivery network to join the waitlist.

This creates two clear customer journeys:

Currently Servicing Customers can subscribe immediately.

Coming Soon Customers can join the waitlist and be notified when delivery expands to their area.

The structure is also designed to make it easier for Grill Grub to expand its delivery network over time.

A Conversion-Focused Homepage

The homepage was designed around the key questions a potential subscriber needs answered before joining:

What is Grill Grub?

A seasonal subscription program delivering premium, grill-ready proteins.

What's in the box?

A clear monthly product preview showing exactly what customers receive.

Can you deliver to me?

ZIP code validation directly within the customer journey.

How does delivery work?

Clear information around delivery availability, capacity, and priority.

Can I skip or cancel?

The subscription experience communicates the flexibility available to customers.

Why should I join now?

Limited delivery capacity and seasonal availability create a clear reason to reserve a spot.

The live experience uses monthly tabs to let customers preview the changing box contents, while the main subscription section reinforces the current box, pricing, contents, and delivery information.

Seasonal Product Management

Grill Grub isn't built around a single permanent product catalog.

The website was structured so that the product portfolio can evolve throughout the grilling season.

As the monthly box changes, the team can update the product lineup and present the new selection to customers without rebuilding the entire website.

This gives the business the flexibility it needs to operate a seasonal subscription model while maintaining a consistent customer experience.

Email & Customer Communication

We connected Klaviyo to the website to support customer communication and email marketing.

This provides Grill Grub with the infrastructure needed to communicate with subscribers and customers beyond the website, supporting the relationship throughout the subscription lifecycle.

Forms & Lead Capture

We integrated Web3Forms to handle website form submissions and customer enquiries.

This provides a simple way for the Grill Grub team to receive and manage enquiries generated through the website.

The integration supports the wider customer journey alongside the subscription and ecommerce experience.

Design & User Experience

The website was designed from the ground up around the Grill Grub brand and its unique subscription model.

Rather than presenting the service like a generic subscription box, the experience emphasizes the seasonal nature of the product and the value of having premium, grill-ready proteins delivered directly to the customer.

We focused on:

Clear Product Communication Customers can easily understand what is included in each month's box.

Conversion-Focused Journeys Primary actions are consistently centered around checking delivery availability and joining the program.

Responsive Experience The website was designed to work across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Visual Product Presentation Product imagery and monthly box previews make the subscription tangible before purchase.

Simple Navigation The structure keeps the customer focused on the core subscription journey while still providing access to FAQs, delivery information, and the brand story.

The new website brings together:

From Business Model to Subscription Experience

Grill Grub demonstrates how a subscription website can be built around the actual operational model of a business rather than forcing the business into a generic subscription template.

From the changing monthly product portfolio and add-on logic to delivery validation and limited service areas, we translated the business requirements into a simple customer experience.

The result is a flexible subscription platform that allows Grill Grub to manage a seasonal product program while giving customers a clear, easy path to join and receive their monthly boxes.
